Mathare man shot dead, another stabbed during protests over election

A man was hit by a stray bullet during protests in Mathare slums, Nairobi, today.

The incident occurred as a crowd marched following interim presidential election results that gave incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta a lead over NASA’s Raila Odinga. Residents engaged police, lit fires on roads, ran about with twigs and hampered transport.

Police said the deceased had been trying to help another who was stabbed with a knife when the bullet hit him. It is not clear whether the shot was fired by a police officer or a civilian.

Protests over the election also took place in Homa Bay and Kondele in Kisumu.

But acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said they are not aware of any unrest in the county.

Matiang’i said action will be taken against social media users spreading information that might endanger national security while the election commission collates election results.

Speaking to reporters, he also said Kenyans should go about their business as normal.
