Al Shabaab kills six in attacks on Mandera buses

More than six people were killed when suspected Al Shabaab militants sprayed two buses with bullets today morning.

The attackers ambushed the vehicles belonging to Tawakal and E-Coach bus companies between Wargadud and Elwak. The attack happened at 9.30 am as the buses headed to Mandera town from Nairobi.

Mandera has been the scene of frequent Al Shabaab attacks in which dozens of civilians and security personnel have been killed.

Locals said the victims include a Kenya Police Reservist and a bus driver. They said several others were injured in the assault.

The county security committee had suspended bus travel by non-locals until after Ramadhan due to threats by the terror group.

The warning on Thursday came after police refused to provide security following a previous attack, that left five police officers dead.

Governor Ali Roba said: “Al Shabaab is imposing a total economic sanction on Mandera’s people. We cannot allow this to happen.”
