The death toll from floods and landslides in Central Java has risen to 47, as a rescue mission for another 15 people who are missing continues.
Heavy rains drenched several areas in much of the region over the weekend, triggering flooding and landslides in several towns and cities across the Indonesian province.
‘At this time, the victim of landslide has reached 47 people dead and 15 people missing. The data compilation is still ongoing,’ Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Monday.
Thousands of homes have either been buried or inundated with floodwaters.People who are still living in villages that remain at risk from further landslides are set to be relocated as soon as possible, as the compensation and aid is handed out to those affected.
Purworejo – which is in the southern part of the province – has been worst hit.Mr Nugroho said various local governments were working together in the rescue effort, with teams prioritizing Caok and Donorati villages in Central Java.
A search will be carried out for another week by the provincial disaster management authority, the military, police and locals.He warned that heavy rainfall has been forecast for Sumatra, Java, Maluku and Papua.
