England Humiliated by Iceland, Coach retires

England national team was yesterday humbled by the Iceland players after Roy Hodgson team was smashed 2-1 in a game that England fans blamed Iceland for “parking the bus.”

After the defeat,  resigned the 68-year-old had been in charge for four years after replacing Italian Fabio Capello  decided his future and announced his retirement as England manager Iceland saw them knocked out of Euro 2016.

The Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic volcanic landscape of geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, glaciers and black-sand beaches, with a population of just 330,000 and it was among the lowest-ranked teams in France at 34 in the world.

“I’m sorry it will have to end this way but these things happen,” Hodgson said.

“I hope you will still be able to see an England team in a final of a major tournament soon.

“Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players. They have done fantastically, and done everything asked of them.”

Hodgson, who won 33 of his 56 games in charge, would have been out of contract at the end of the tournament and was set to have talks over having it renewed.

Rio Ferdinand and Jermaine Jenas have joined Shearer is digging out England for a dreadful display.

“If you don’t know your best team or your best formation, you’re running into trouble,” said Ferdinand.

“We had no real idea of where to run. There was no inventiveness.

“I was excited before the tournament. Maybe I was led up a garden path by this team.”

Jermaine Jenas added: “I don’t think Roy knew what he was doing. His loyalty towards his players has cost him his job. It is a horrible way to go out of a tournament.”
