During the activity, residents, Kitengela Municipality board members, traders, plot owners and school going children came together to take part in the clean-up exercise and inform the public on the importance of waste management.
Speaking to the media during the clean-up exercise, Kitengela Municipality Chairman Julius ole Ntayia, said that the Municipality board is working hard to eliminate solid waste and sewage in the Municipality.
“In every three months, we will be having clean-up exercises in Kitengela as it is a populous town and we want the population and business people to stay in a clean and conducive environment,” said Ntayia.
He noted that the Municipality board will meet with all stakeholders to find out how to put a sewer system in place.
Ole Ntayia revealed that the board has already written proposals to various development partners including the World Bank, African Development Bank and the National Government to help them put up a sewer system.
Bruce Likama, the Sub County Administrator for Kajiado East encouraged the Kitengela community to observe cleanliness and always keep their environment clean.
“Always ensure that your garbage is at the convenient location for collection by the County Government and the private garbage collectors. Let us try and make Kitengela Municipality clean,” Said Likama
Likama added that residents should avoid dumping trash everywhere as everyone is responsible for ensuring cleanliness.
This was the first activity that has been carried out by the Kitengela Municipality Board ever since it attained Municipality status in July 2022.
The clean-up activity involved garbage collection, cleaning of all the streets and market places, unblocking all drainage channels and culverts and creating awareness on solid waste management.
The World Clean-up day is held annually and aims at cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from the beaches, rivers, forests, and streets by the resident communities.
The event is organized by ‘Let’s Do It World’ (LDIW) which is a global organization that unites more than 191 countries.
