Kirinyaga and Laikipia Counties are the latest casualties of the locust invasion. The counties are key Agricultural breadbaskets in Kenya sending alarm bells that other neighbouring regions could soon be under siege.
Experts have cautiously warned that the locusts pose a threat to food security. Kirinyaga County Assembly Majority Leader Kamau Murango called for urgent action to stop the spread.
“I have also received information that locusts have been seen in some parts of the region. If urgent measures are not taken, it will be a disaster,” said Mr Murango.
He further said, “As leaders, we are concerned about the invasion … Residents are dependent on agriculture for survival and if their crops are destroyed they will suffer.”
Kenya’s economy is largely dependent on Agriculture, a slight interruption could spell economic doom.
