Mzee Moi’s funeral service is underway at Kabarak University grounds. Kenya’s second President will be laid to rest at his Kabarak home later in the afternoon. The military will be fully in-charge of the ceremony.
Moi who ruled Kenya for 24 years passed on last week on February 4th aged 95. The late President’s body was ferried by a military helicopter from Wilson Airport to Kabarak Airstrip. Gideon Moi was among family members who accompanied the body.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, several dignitaries and military generals led by Chief of Defense Forces, Gen Samson Mwathethe are among thousands attending the funeral service. The President and his Deputy are accompanied by their spouses Margaret and Rachel.
Reports indicated about 400 people had clearance to attend final rites at the graveside.
Also in attendance are Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, and Chief Justice David Maraga.
Raymond Moi, Moi’s eldest surviving son and area lawmaker, his siblings Philip, Jennifer, Doris and June are family members present.
