NEEDY FAMILIES IN MOMBASA RECEIVE DONATIONS AHEAD OF RAMADAN

The Jaffer Foundation in conjunction with Grain Bulk Handlers Limited in Mombasa today morning has given out food donations worth Sh. 110 million to help the less fortunate members of the society in the wake of the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic and to enable needy Muslims fasting month of Ramadan which begins next week. During the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, there is a noticeable increase in charitable work across the Muslim world.

Jaffer foundation director Yussuf Jiwa said in keeping with the season’s theme of sacrifice and remembering the poor, the foundation will be feeding the poor throughout the blessed month of Ramadan. Jiwa said the assorted food stuffs will be distributed to the less fortunate in the country. He said the supplies will also benefit less fortunate Kenyans who have been economically ravaged by the covid-19 pandemic.

He said the company is using the fasting festival to donate food to the poor in the society as is the tradition in the Muslim world.nHe said the donated assorted food stuff included maize flour, rice, cooking oil, wheat flour, dates, sugar, tea leaves and beans. Jiwa says Ramadan creates a perfect opportunity to donate to charity and promote unity besides coming to the aid of those who need assistance.

Solomon Ondego of the Grain Bulk Handlers Limited said each 50 kg bag contains food assortment worth 5,000 shillings and the whole food consignment cost the company 110 million shillings. Ondego said the food donation will be able to cushion the less fortunate Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet in the wake of the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic.

According to Ondego, the food donation will feed a family in one month and would benefit 100,000 needy households. Ondego exhorted Kenyans and organizations to give charity to the less fortunate members of the society who have been down trodden economically by covid-19.“We hope that this small humble contribution of ours will cushion the poor people and we want to pledge to other individuals and organizations also to assist the suffering Kenyans during the pandemic,” he said.

He said the donations will ensure that the deprived and struggling in poverty-stricken areas of the country will have enough to sustain their families through the blessed month. Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse are strictly forbidden from sunrise to sunset when the faithful break their fast.
