The establishment of new universities in Kenya has been dealt a huge blow after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a freeze in the establishment of new universities.
“I have ordered a freeze in the establishment of new universities. Quantity at the expense of quality has a potential to harm our country,” Uhuru Kenyatta said adding that institutions should be globally competitive.
“Our institutions have to be globally competitive in their operations & service delivery,” he added. “Our focus now must be strengthening the institutions that we have, building their resilience and ensuring sustained quality.”
This came after eight the president awarded Charter to 8 universities today.
Among the beneficiaries of the charter includes KAG EAST University in Kakamega, Rongo University, The Co-operative University, Taita-Taveta University, Murang’a University of Technology, University of Embu, Machakos University and Kirinyaga University.
