Reprieve for Kilifi farmers set to benefit from Galla goat farming

More than 3000 livestock farmers in Kilifi County are set to benefit from milk and meat goat farming programe initiated by the County Government of Kilifi through the Department of Livestock and Fisheries.

Speaking during a distribution exercise of Galla goats to more than 300 farmers at Matano Manne Grounds in Sokoke Ward, Ganze Sub-county the County Executive Committee Member Agriculture, Livestock and fisheries Mrs. Luciana Sanzua said the programme is aimed at giving farmers an alternative farming activities rather than depending on crop farming which has always been a challenge due to unreliable rainfall patterns experienced across the County.

She further said that the County Department of Agriculture has invested heavily to see major developments in the agricultural sector and enhance security thus reducing county’s dependency on relief food and Poverty levels in Kilifi.

Fredrick Kaingu Chief officer says the galla goats are resistant to harsh climatic conditions making them ideal for the region saying the goats are also resistant to many diseases making the project viable as he called on farmers to cross breed with the local breed for high productivity.
