Sonko bans boda boda from the city

Nairobi County governor Mike Sonko has banned motorbike operators from entering the city Centre amid a public outcry over criminal activities. Muggers have been snatching laptops, handbags and even mobile phones from pedestrians in broad day light within the CBD. Peter Mbaya the Director of Operations at the Inspectorate Department, said beginning today January 23 boda bodas will not be allowed in the Central Business District. “Any operator and passenger found contravening this law will be arrested for an offence punishable by hefty finesand long jail terms as provided for in the Traffic Act, 2014.”  Said Mbaya. He said only motorcycles having carrier boxes or those offering courier services and have branded boxes will be exempted. Mr. Mbaya described the boda boda operators as rogue and noted that some of them are colluding with gangsters in organizing crimes with the city Centre. Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has since appointed an anti-mugging squad amid efforts to curb crime in the city Centre.
