Mike Jacobs who contested for the post of Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) chairmanship against Babu Owino was due in court Tuesday morning following his arrest.
Jacobs spent the night at the Central Police station where he was detained on accusations of torching SONU offices during last month’s protests over the election results which favoured Owino.
Police have indicated that he will be facing arson and malicious damage to property charges at the Milimani Law courts.
Jacobs was expelled from the university last month after leading hundreds of students in violent protests that led to the closure of the campus for more than two weeks.
The UoN senate had also expelled 33 students over violent protests against the disputed SONU elections.
The senate further suspended 25 students for a period of 2-3 years, issued warnings to 143 and pardoned 17.
Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi had said the independent election petitions panel received 17 petitions arising from the 2016 student union elections.
