Student in Moi Girls arson case likely to face murder charges

The student suspected to have started the fire at Moi Girls High School, Nairobi may be charged with nine counts of murder today. She is also likely to be charged with arson following the death of her nine schoolmates.

The officers investigating the incident said they are now ready to prosecute her despite protests by her parents. The girl’s parents complained that their daughter was being framed.

Experts’ report showed that the fire was started intentionally. The girl was detained for seven days to allow police conclude investigations. More than ten students were injured following the inferno which destroyed Kabarnet dormitory at the school.

On Tuesday, the nine bodies were positively identified following the completion of DNA examinations. Government pathologist Johansen Oduor described the process as successful.

Oduor headed a team of experts in identifying the bodies using DNA provided by parents and relatives. Those identified include Alakir Malong, Esther Mose, Hannah Jeiso, Hawa Awuor Aziz, Mercia Eunice Ogello, Natalia Nanga and Whitney Kerubo.
