Two police officers injured in chopper crash after take off from Wilson Airport

Two police officers on a flight training mission were yesterday afternoon injured after the helicopter they were in crashed at Wilson Airport shortly after taken off.

The instructor and a female trainee are reported to have taken off from the airport in a Kenya Police Bell 206L-4 Long Ranger registration number 5Y-COP CN: 52367, N2664B when it crashed at 1pm.

Emergency services were quickly scrambled and the instructor, who appeared to have been injured, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was said to be out of danger.

Some pilots at Wilson Airport said the helicopter was extensively damaged. It is unknown whether the helicopter, which as been in service since 2010, was insured.

The government recently refurbished three of the police Mi-17 Russian made helicopters and bought a new Bell helicopter to assist in the easy and quick mobilization of police officers to volatile areas.

The National Police Service operates 14 aircraft, which are at the disposal of both Administration Police and Kenya Police services. Six of the aircraft are fixed wing while eight are helicopters.
