President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Ministry of Health to suspend the proposed changes by the State Health Insurer (NHIF) Uhuru ordered an immediate halt of the proposals to allow for further consultations.
President Uhuru said, “With regard to Kenya Health Insurance, I am aware of the proposed changes in the fees and structure of insurance benefits by the NHIF. And given my administration’s commitment to providing affordable healthcare, I am today directing the Ministry of Health to immediately halt the implementation of this proposal to allow for further consultations.”
Kenyans had largely condemned the changes terming them punitive. The tough changes would have seen many locked out of basic medical insurance. A notable shocker was that current contributors were to pay a one-year advance payment.
NHIF had claimed that the changes were meant to align it (NHIF) towards the attainment of sustainable Universal Health Coverage and for membership retention. The proposals were to take effect come January 1st.
