Vehicles and motorbikes detained as passengers arrested in Nyeri County

A total of 118 vehicles, 82 motorbikes and 188 commuters yesterday brushed shoulders with the law in Nyeri County for flouting “Michuki rules”.

The local County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia said the cases were promptly processed and arraigned in various law courts in the region.

Shisia who briefed the press in Nyeri town last evening noted that the crackdown on Public Service Vehicles, private and motorbikes was generally successful in its first day.

“Though the matatu sub-sector plays an important role in the economy, the operators must adhere to the traffic rules to ensure sanity on the roads,” Shisia said.

He warned idlers in bus termini in the area to clear or risk arrest and prosecution.

“If you are not a driver, a conductor or a passenger, clear from the stages or be arrested,” Shisia said.

The Administrator said vehicle owners, drivers and Saccos would be held to account if a PSV contravenes the rules.

He maintained that the random checks would be sustained to ensure complicity with the traffic rules.

Speaking at the same time, Nyeri County Police Commander Ali Nuno warned police officers that it is a crime to be compromised by the offenders.

He at the same time warned boda boda riders against fleeing when flagged down by police,  adding that they would put a caveat on them and be netted when renewing licenses.

“They have the habit of running away when stopped by police and we cannot chase them through paths,” he said.
