The flood-related death toll has increased after 9 lives were lost in the last 24 hours.
Speaking in Garashi, Kilifi County, the government’s spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura announced that 4 adults and 5 children have lost their lives in the last 24 hours.
“It is with sorrow that we report the unfortunate loss of 9 precious lives. Four adults and five children, in the last 24 hours,” said the government spokesperson.
This raises the national flood-related death toll to 188 comprising 151 adults and 37 children.
So far, 125 individuals have been injured and 90 are reported missing.
The floods have also resulted in the displacement of 1,759 households in the last hours bringing the total number of displaced households to 33,100, affecting approximately 165,500 people.
The ongoing rainfall continues to worsen the flooding situation in various parts of the country, including Nairobi, Kajiado, Nakuru, Mandera, and Homa Bay Counties.
These floods have caused loss of life, damage to property, and disruption of services. Mwaura confirmed the total number of casualties in the mudslide that occurred in the Mai Mahiu area of Nakuru County.
50 individuals have been confirmed dead, including 32 adults and 18 children.
73 people were injured and are currently receiving treatment in different healthcare facilities, while 69 individuals remain missing.
In Kilifi County 847 households, comprising approximately 4,235 individuals, have been displaced by the floods.
Isaac Mwaura assured the public that the distribution of relief items is ongoing across the country in partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government.
“The government keeps replenishing our relief granaries to have sufficient supplies to support those affected by these floods,” noted Mwaura.
