Kenya, US Ink Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway Deal

Cabinet Secretary for Road and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen had a virtual meeting with United States Secretary for Transportation Pete Buttigieg on several areas of cooperation, including road safety, mass rapid transport and aviation.

Kenya Highways Authority and the US infrastructure manager signed a $3.6 billion agreement to build a highway between the capital city and the port city of Mombasa.

According to the CS they also discussed green transportation solutions for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and explored avenues for knowledge exchange and capacity building in the sector.

Murkomen also expressed gratitude to the US Government for inviting President Ruto to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Additionally, the CS conveyed gratitude for the commitments made, including the construction of a 477km expressway between Nairobi and Mombasa by the US private sector and a 3km runaway at Manda Airport in Lamu, in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces.

“I also used the opportunity to convey our gratitude to the US Government following the invitation and hosting of our President HE Wiliam Samoei Ruto by President Joe Biden, and for the commitments made, including the building of the 477km expressway between Nairobi and Mombasa by US private sector and a 3km runway at Manda Airport in Lamu, in conjunction with KDF,” Murkomen wrote on X.

Present at the meeting were Roads Principal Secretary Eng Joseph Mbugua, Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar and Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority DG Eng Francis Gitau.
