3 blasts kill at least 17; police, medics – Baghdad

A series of bomb blasts has been reported in Baghdad.

According to medics and police reports, at least 17 people were killed with 55 others wounded following the blasts.

First Attack

A lone bomber detonated himself around a gathering of construction workers on a commercial street in the Jadida neighbourhood in the east of the city, a police official said.

At least eight people were killed and 29 wounded in Jadida, although some said the area was hit by a roadside bomb as well as a suicide bomber.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Second attack

Another suicide bomber targeted the Bayaa area in south Baghdad, killing at least six people and wounding 26, officials said as accounts of the death toll conflicted with officials saying that they were likely to rise.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the second suicide attack.

Third attack

A roadside bomb exploded near a gathering of cattle herders and merchants in al-Radhwaniya, also in western Baghdad, killing two people, they said.

Past attacks

Tuesday’s violence came two days after another suicide bombing killed six people in western Baghdad.

A day before that, 12 people were killed in the area of Tikrit, a city north of the capital.

The hardline sunni group has stepped up its attacks in government held areas of Iraq this year as they lose more ground to the Iraqi forces on the battlefield.

IS (Daesh) controls Iraq’s second largest city Mosul, which they captured in 2014. Iraqi forces loyal to the government of Hiader al-Abadi hope to launch an offensive to regain control of the city by the end of the year.

In July, the terrorist group claimed a bombing attack which killed at least 324 people in Karrada shopping area of Baghdad.
