A multi-agency security team has launched a full-scale investigation into an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that rocked a local eatery in the Shafshafey area of Mandera earlier today, leaving one person injured and causing significant structural damage.
The incident occurred during the morning hours when four customers were inside the establishment.
According to authorities, the blast blew off the hotel’s rooftop and caused visible cracks in the surrounding walls, triggering panic among residents in the area.
“Responding swiftly, the team established that the explosion had blown off the hotel’s rooftop and caused visible cracks in the walls,” stated the DCI.
Out of the four individuals present during the explosion, three managed to escape unhurt. However, one man sustained serious injuries, including a fractured left femur and pellet wounds to the abdomen.
He was rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.
“At the time of the incident, four customers were inside the eatery. Three of them escaped unhurt, while one individual sustained a fractured left femur and pellet injuries to the abdomen,” added the detectives.
In a swift response, investigators at the scene gathered evidence that led to a major breakthrough. Preliminary findings revealed that two of the individuals who escaped the explosion unscathed were the masterminds behind the attack.
The suspects were quickly apprehended and are now in police custody as investigations continue.
Security personnel are currently pursuing a boda-boda rider believed to have transported the suspects to the hotel.
