Rigathi Gachagua Unveils His New Political Party, DCP

By Edna Akoth

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unveiled his new political party called the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

This follows his resignation from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), in which he supported President Ruto as a running mate during the 2022 elections and subsequently won.

The party’s logo features a hand holding an ear, symbolizing attentiveness to the concerns of the people. It incorporates the colours green, red, black and white.

Its slogan is, “Skiza Wakenya,” which translates to listen to Kenyans in English.

DCP is framed as a platform for national renewal, a governance that listens and prioritises the people.

Key appointments within the party include: Cleopas Malala, the former Kakamega senator, as the deputy party leader, Former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, as the organising secretary, former Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru as the National Women’s Leader and Former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi as Deputy Party chair of strategy.

Others include: Hesbon Obanga as Secretary General, Hannah Mutua as treasurer, Andrew Kiplimo Muge as Director of Elections, Maina Kamanda as the Chairperson of the Council of Eminent Persons, Alex Khamasi as the National Counties Coordinator, Mercy Gakuya as Secretary for Education, Hussein Athmani as Secretary for Tourism and John Maraga to represent People With Disabilities.

In attendance at the unveiling were Gachagua’s wife, Dorcas Gachagua, as well as several political heavyweights, influential figures, and former government officials.

Gachagua announced that he would officially launch the party on June 4th, ahead of his planned two-year nationwide tour.

The formation of this party could potentially reshape the political dynamics of Mt. Kenya and even influence the broader political landscape of Kenya in the lead-up to the 2027 elections
