The President of the Tanganyika Law Society, Boniface Mwabukusi, has confirmed the deportation of Boniface Mwangi, a Kenyan activist and Agatha Atuhaire, a journalist and lawyer from Uganda.
This confirmation came after Lawyer Emmanuel Ukashu provided official information regarding the individuals’ arrests, following requests for assistance from their lawyers and the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Advocate Faith Odhiambo.
According to the Tanganyika Law Society President, he received official information from Lawyer Emmanuel Ukashu who after getting news of the arrest of the accused and being asked by their lawyers to help them with the matter and insist on request from the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Advocate Faith Odhiambo.
“I have just received information from Lawyer Emmanuel Ukashu confirming that Mr. Boniface Mwangi, a journalist and human rights advocate from Kenya, along with Mrs. Agatha Atuhaire, a journalist and lawyer from Uganda, were detained at the police headquarters in Dar es Salaam, the United Republic of Tanzania. Since May 19, 2025, they have been expelled and repatriated to their respective countries,” stated Lawyer Mwabukusi.
He further explained that activist Boniface Mwangi was arrested on suspicion of providing false information to enter Tanzania, where he arrived on May 18, 2025
The two individuals were deported with an official escort from the Tanzanian Department of Immigration.
“As advocates for human rights, the rule of law, and constitutional integrity in the East African region, we are committed to collaborating with our authorities to ensure adherence to regional treaties, constitutions, and national and international laws that protect human rights, journalists, and justice defenders,” he added.
Mwabukusi emphasized the importance of respecting the principles established under the East African Community Treaty, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and other internationally recognized documents to enhance accountability, transparency, and good governance within the region.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu recently issued a warning to foreign activists, accusing them of attempting to interfere with Tanzania’s internal affairs.
Speaking during the launch of Tanzania’s new foreign policy, she highlighted that Tanzania is the only peaceful nation in the region, free from the influence of such activists.
“We have started to see activists from our region trying to intrude into our issues. Let us not give them the opportunity. They have already caused problems in their own countries,” she cautioned.
President Suluhu also called on Tanzania’s security agencies to prevent these ‘undisciplined activists’ from entering the country.
