Giovanni Leoni Heads to Liverpool for Medical Checkup, Signing of Contract

Giovanni Leoni is in Liverpool today to complete his transfer from Parma, with a medical checkup and the signing of the contract to be performed.

The 18-year-old central defender has traveled alongside his agent following Liverpool’s finalization of a deal with Parma for a transaction valued at approximately £26 million plus add-ons, as confirmed late on Wednesday.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Leoni’s move is fully agreed, with no loan option discussed. He will join Arne Slot’s squad immediately, showing Liverpool’s intention to have him involved in the first team right away.

Liverpool sees Leoni as an important addition to strengthen their defence, especially with the possibility of experienced players like Ibrahima Konaté leaving.

The recent sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen has also created room for another central defender.

Standing at 1.95 metres tall, Leoni brings physical presence and has already shown calmness and maturity in Serie A. Last season, he played 17 matches for Parma and impressed against top strikers such as Romelu Lukaku and Napoli’s attacking line.

The size of the transfer fee makes him one of the most expensive teenage defenders in Europe, underlining Liverpool’s belief in his talent and potential.

Born in Rome on December 21, 2006, Leoni came through the youth systems at Padova and Sampdoria before joining Parma.

He has represented Italy at the under-18 and under-19 levels. His height, athletic ability and composure on the ball have earned him praise from coaches and scouts.

Former Serie A coach Arrigo Sacchi once described him as a player who could be a key part of the Italian national team for years to come.

Leoni is expected to complete his medical today and sign his contract, officially becoming a Liverpool player.

He will go straight into training with the first team rather than being sent out on loan. The signing reflects Liverpool’s long-term vision of blending proven experience with promising young talent.

An official announcement is expected soon, and if all goes as planned, Leoni could be available for the  Liverpool Premier League match opener on Friday.
