Speaking at a Sunday service that was held at Chebukwa Catholic Church in Bungoma County, the current Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya, Moses Wetangula echoed the urgency of addressing key national issues.
“One of our priorities after the resumption will be the reconstitution of the IEBC, a matter crucial for the country’s progress,” he stated.
The reconstitution of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is progressing after significant delays.
In July 2024, President William Ruto signed the IEBC Amendment Bill into law, which followed recommendations from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO)
Wetangula highlighted that the delays in boundary reviews and pending by-elections in several wards and constituencies could no longer be tolerated.
“I urge those obstructing this process to reconsider their stance and allow the country to move forward,” he added.
The absence of IEBC commissioners is said to have stalled critical electoral operations, and there has been an urgent need to have the new commission fully operational to ensure transparent and efficient electoral processes moving forward
The reconstitution is seen as an essential move to resuming the commission’s core functions, including boundary reviews and the organization of pending by-elections
He then proceeded to call on Chief Justice Hon. Martha Koome to expedite court cases related to the IEBC.
Another key focus for Parliament, according to the Wetangula, will be education reform.
“Parliament will also focus on consolidating public educational resources to potentially offer free education from Primary through University,” adding that such reforms are essential for shaping the future of Kenya.
The leader was accompanied by several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), including Hon. Juma Nyongesa, the leader of the majority in the Bungoma County Assembly, along with other prominent leaders, showing a united front as they prepare to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges.
