DCI Investigates Fr. Maina’s Death Allegedly Linked to Gachagua’s ‘Gift’

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a probe into the suspicious death of Father John Maina, a Catholic priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu, amid claims of abduction and money disputes.

Fr. Maina had presided over the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the parish on April 27, 2025.

The event was graced by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other politicians.

On May 15, Fr. Maina was found injured near Diotomite Stage along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway by a boda boda rider.

He reportedly told the rider he had been abducted from Nyahururu. He had visible head injuries and was bleeding.

The Good Samaritan rushed him to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil. Unfortunately, he passed away while receiving treatment.

His body was moved to Nyahururu Sub-County morgue for an autopsy.

An autopsy conducted on May 19 by government pathologist Dr. Titus Ngulungu revealed that the head injuries were unlikely to be the cause of death. Toxicological tests are underway.

“It has been established that Fr. Maina was being trailed by individuals who were demanding a share of money allegedly given to him after the ceremony by former Deputy President Gachagua,” said the DCI in a statement.

They also confirmed Fr. Maina had previously said his life was in danger, although no official report was made.

Several witness statements have been recorded. DCI has urged the public to remain calm and report any helpful information.
