Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters have apprehended Stephen Mugambi Colbert, a suspected fraudster implicated in a high-stakes scheme to defraud a Nigerian national of 150 million Naira (approximately Ksh 56 million).
Mugambi, posing as a legitimate businessman alongside accomplices still at large, approached the unsuspecting victim with a compelling tale of being able to hire a private jet to transport substantial investment funds from Kenya to Nigeria.
“While presenting themselves as genuine business men, Mugambi and his cabal of malefactors approached the victim pretending that they were in a position to hire a private jet to transport unspecified investments funds from Kenya to Nigeria, a fact they knew to be false,” explained the DCI.
However, once the victim transferred the payment of 150 million naira, efforts to reach Mugambi and his colleagues were futile, prompting the foreign national to turn to the DCI for assistance.
“Unbeknownst of the foul play, the victim made the payment amounting to 150 million naira only to realize later that he had been played when he could no longer reach Stephen or his cabal of friends in crime,’ added the DCI.
Following a thorough investigation, detectives tracked down and arrested Mugambi, while his accomplices narrowly evaded capture.
The DCI has assured the public that it is only a matter of time before they are brought to justice.
The DCI has issued a stern warning to individuals engaging in fraudulent schemes.
“The DCI strongly warns that no efforts will be spared in dealing with such fraudsters,” warned the detectives.
The detectives also cautioned the public about an emerging trend where fraudsters use cryptocurrency as a means of exchange to avoid detection, bypassing formal financial systems.
