The long quest for justice in the murder of Agnes Wanjiru, a 21-year-old mother brutally killed in Nanyuki in 2012, has taken a fresh momentum after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) issued a warrant of arrest against a British national linked to the crime.
According to the DPP, Wanjiru, a young freelance hairdresser and mother of a four-month-old baby, was last seen alive on March 31, 2012, at Lions Court Lodge in Nanyuki.
Her body was discovered two months later, on June 5, 2012, in a septic tank at the lodge.
“Wanjiru, a 21-year-old freelance hairdresser and mother to a four-month-old infant, disappeared on March 31, 2012, after being last seen at Lions Court Lodge in Nanyuki. Her body was later discovered in a septic tank at the same lodge on June 5, 2012, sparking national outrage and calls for accountability,” stated the ODPP.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) presented evidence before the High Court indicating that the UK citizen is directly connected to the killing.
However, the DPP requested the issuance of a warrant of arrest to pave the way for extradition proceedings.
Justice Alexander Muteti granted the request, ruling that murder is an extraditable offence and affirming that there is probable cause to prosecute the suspect for murder charges against the accused.
Following the ruling, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), represented by Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Vincent Monda and Head of the Homicide Division Gikui Gichuhi, confirmed that formal extradition proceedings will now commence to secure the suspect’s presence before a Kenyan court.
The matter is set to return to court on October 21, 2025, for further directions.
