Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has died following a tragic road accident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning at Karai area in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
Police and family sources confirmed that Jirongo, 64, was driving himself to his rural home in Lugari, Kakamega County, when his vehicle was involved in a fatal head-on collision with a passenger bus along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
According to Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo, the accident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. on December 13, 2025.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that Jirongo was driving a Mercedes-Benz motor vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, from the Nakuru direction towards Nairobi when the crash occurred.
In a police report, authorities stated that upon reaching the Karai area, Jirongo’s vehicle failed to keep to its inner lane and collided head-on with an oncoming Climax Coach bus, registration number KCU 576A, which was being driven by Tiras Kamau Githinji, aged 52.
“The accident occurred today, 13/12/2025, at about 0300hrs at Karai area along Nakuru–Naivasha highway. One Cyrus Jirongo, aged 64 years, was driving motor vehicle reg. no. KCZ 305U from Nakuru direction heading towards Nairobi direction, and upon reaching the location of the accident, he failed to keep to its inner lane and collided head-on with the oncoming motor vehicle reg. no. KCU 576A belonging to Climax Company,” the report read.
Police said Jirongo sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Witnesses described the car as badly damaged following the collision. Friends and relatives who rushed to the scene were directed to a local mortuary, where the body had been moved by police.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident as tributes continue to pour in for the former legislator.
