The Inspector General of the national police, Japhet Koome, has issued a warning concerning the public demonstrations to occupy parliament on June 20th 2024.
In his statement, IG Koome acknowledged the current demonstrations taking place nationwide as well as the discussions at the National Assembly concerning the Finance Bill, 2024.
“The National Police Service is cognizant of the current demonstrations going on across the Country today June 20, 2024, and the ongoing debate at the National Assembly regarding Finance Bill, 2024,” read the Inspector General’s statement in part.
The head of police further stated that he fully recognized the rights granted under Article 37 of the Constitution allowing citizens to gather, demonstrate and protest.
“With utmost respect to the provisions of Article 37 of the Constitution stipulating the right of citizens to assemble, demonstrate and picket, “stated the president of the Afripol general assembly.
He however added that the Police Service would not tolerate or authorize any attempts by the protestors to occupy crucial government facilities such as Parliament Buildings, or disrupt the parliamentary proceedings in progress.
“Service will neither condone nor approve efforts by demonstrators to either occupy critical government infrastructure including Parliament Buildings, or disrupt the ongoing Parliamentary proceedings,” the IG warned.
The Occupy parliament demonstrations have been taking place in various parts of the country with demonstrators demonstrating against the Finance Bill 2024.
The Bill has however passed its second reading with 204 Members of Parliament voting in favour and 115 voting against it.
The head of police reaffirmed the dedication national police service to uphold law and order, as well as safeguarding lives and property.
“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to maintain law and order; and protect life and property,” IG Japhet assured.
