The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) dispatched a Rapid Response Team on Friday, 6 June 2025, to investigate the fatal shooting ordeal that occurred on Thursday, 5 June 2025.

The Chairperson of IPOA, Ahmed Hassan, explained through an official press release what transpired during the tragic incident.

“The incident occurred after police allegedly opened fire on a group of individuals who had reportedly invaded a private property within the Angama Conservancy, located in Lokluruk Village, Angama Mara, Narok County,” said Hassan.

According to IPOA, the shootout left several people dead and others seriously injured, sparking public outrage and concern from local leaders and human rights organisations.

All serious injuries and deaths resulting from police operations ought to be thoroughly investigated, in line with the provisions of Section 7 of the IPOA Act, Chapter 86 of the Laws of Kenya.

The law mandates IPOA to conduct independent oversight and hold police accountable for any unlawful actions.

“The dispatched team has been instructed to gather all information relevant to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident,” added Hassan.

In the statement, the Authority extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and to the individuals who sustained injuries.

It further appealed to local residents to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigations, urging the public to allow the due process of law to take its course. The IPOA also reiterated its unwavering commitment to independence and transparency.

“Across its work, IPOA commits to remain independent, impartial, fair and apolitical in all its investigations,” the Authority emphasized.

As the investigation progresses, the public awaits IPOA’s findings, which are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the fatal police operation.
