The construction of the 750-kilometre Isiolo-Mandera Highway has officially commenced, marking a significant step in Kenya’s infrastructural development.

The project, estimated at Ksh100 billion, aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in Northern Kenya.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki conducted an impromptu inspection of the ongoing works on the 77-kilometre Kula Mawe-Isiolo section, which is being constructed at Ksh8.3 billion.

“Certainly, a flagship project for Kenya’s transformation is underway,” DP Kindiki stated during his visit.

The highway, which traverses towns including Kula Mawe- Modogashe- Samatar- Wajir- Tarbaj- Kotulo- Kobo- Elwak- Garre- Rhamu- Mandera, has been divided into 11 sections.

Seven contractors have been assigned to these sections to ensure timely completion within two years.

“This transport artery will turn around the economy of the Kenya of the North, it will also deal a massive blow to insecurity,” Kindiki added.

President William Ruto earlier reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the project.

Funded by the World Bank, African Development Bank, Arab banks and the Government of Kenya, the project is seen as a key milestone in unlocking economic potential in a historically underserved region.

The Isiolo–Mandera Highway construction represents a pivotal moment in Kenya’s efforts to develop its northern regions, promising improved infrastructure, economic opportunities and enhanced security for the communities.
