Kenya and the State of California, U.S, has signed a historic California–Africa Climate and Economic Partnership, witnessed by California Governor Gavin Newsom and Kenya’s President William Ruto at the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York,
According to President Ruto, the partnership will advance collaboration in critical areas including, sustainable transport and electric mobility.
“This partnership focuses on sustainable transport and electric mobility, green ports, climate-smart agriculture and resilient food systems, renewable energy and green infrastructure, digital innovation, and climate adaptation,” stated the President.
A key highlight of the agreement is the establishment of a Centre of Excellence on Clean Transport Systems in Africa, to be based in Kenya.
The Centre will serve as a hub for innovation, knowledge exchange, and skills development, positioning Africa at the forefront of clean mobility solutions.
“As part of the agreement, a Centre of Excellence on Clean Transport Systems in Africa will be established in Kenya to drive innovation and knowledge exchange,” added the President.
The signing of the agreement makes Kenya the first African country to sign an MoU with California, the world’s fourth-largest economy.
