At the 49th Annual Meeting of the Group of 77 and China, held during the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations, Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the United Nations Charter as the foundation of a consensus-driven, inclusive, and rules-based international order.

Speaking at the meeting of Foreign Ministers, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi,  reminded colleagues that the Charter’s timeless pillars of peace, sustainable development and human rights remain as relevant today as they were in 1945.

“These values, as relevant today as they were in 1945, must remain the compass that guides our collective actions,” noted Mudavadi.

Mudavadi also stressed that reforms pursued under the UN80 Initiative should strengthen multilateralism and ensure greater equity in global governance.

On financing for sustainable development, Kenya called for urgent measures to close the widening gap in delivering the 2030 Agenda.

“I called for urgent action to close the widening gap in delivering the 2030 Agenda. This includes scaling up concessional financing and debt relief for nations in or near distress, honouring long-standing Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitments, and embracing innovative financing in line with the Sevilla Commitment,” he stated.

Turning to climate action, Kenya warned that the threat remains existential, urging the global community to expand adaptation finance, accelerate technology transfer and safeguard the planet’s shared future.

Kenya also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration to bridge the digital divide and to promote inclusive, transparent governance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
