The Government of Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening engagement with Kenyans living and working abroad, recognizing the diaspora as a vital pillar in the country’s economic transformation and development agenda.
In a high-level consultative meeting held at State House Nairobi by President Ruto, representatives of the Kenyan diaspora from 27 countries gathered to discuss the critical role they play in supporting Kenya’s growth through remittances, investments, and skills transfer.
The meeting was also attended by the Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Roseline Njogu.
Speaking at the event, the head of state acknowledged the diaspora’s enduring contribution and emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a more enabling environment for diaspora engagement.
“We appreciate the crucial contribution of Kenyans who live and work abroad in the transformation of our country. Through the State Department of Diaspora Affairs, we have taken deliberate steps to formulate policies that help harness their immense competencies, skills, and resources in national development,” the President said.
Kenya’s diaspora remittances have continued to grow steadily, marking a historic high.
Over the past two years, remittances increased from $4 billion (KSh516 billion) to $4.95 billion (KSh638 billion) last year, boosting Kenya’s foreign reserves which now stand at an all-time high of $10.8 billion.
“These remittances are not just figures on a balance sheet; they represent families being supported, communities being built, and dreams being realized,” added President Ruto.
“We must ensure that our policies reflect the value we place on our diaspora and make it easier for them to invest, own property, and access government services from abroad,” he reaffirmed.
Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu echoed these sentiments, noting the importance of sustained dialogue with the diaspora.
“We are building a framework that makes every Kenyan abroad feel visible, valued, and empowered to contribute meaningfully to their motherland,” she reiterated.
The meeting emphasized mutual accountability, streamlined diaspora services, and upcoming initiatives to deepen diaspora engagement, including digital platforms for service delivery and investment facilitation.
As Kenya looks ahead to a more globally integrated future, the diaspora remains a key partner in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous nation.
