Kenya has reinforced its strong partnership with the United Nations through decades of participation in global peacekeeping missions.
As the only host of UN offices in the Global South, with Nairobi serving as the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-HABITAT, Kenya continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the UN’s agenda.
Ahead of the African Heads of State Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Kenya held high-level talks with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed.
The discussions focused on the escalating insecurity in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where MONUSCO staff face heightened risks amidst the deteriorating situation.
“Our relations with the United Nations have been firmly cemented by Kenya’s participation in UN peace-keeping missions in numerous parts of the world,” stated President Ruto.
Ms. Mohammed commended Kenya’s unwavering support for peace and security efforts in the region and emphasized the need for greater regional collaboration to safeguard peacekeepers and humanitarian workers.
She highlighted the UN’s backing of the ongoing initiatives by the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State, including an upcoming high-level meeting aimed at de-escalating the hostilities in Eastern DRC.
“She expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Eastern DRC, and sought support for the safety of staff working with the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO),” added President Ruto.
Kenya reiterated its commitment to working with regional and international partners to restore stability and ensure the safety of UN personnel.
As a steadfast advocate for peace and multilateralism, Kenya remains dedicated to fostering sustainable solutions to the conflicts plaguing the region.
