KMPDU Secretary General Shot During Protest

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Attellah has been shot by anti-riot police officers at the gates of the Ministry of Health.
It is here that medical doctors gathered to protest the delayed hiring of Medical Interns. Dr Attellah has been rushed to hospital for emergency care.

We were marching towards the treasury, around the Argwings Kodhek road when a cop just shot him at close range in the head and he just collapsed,” said Miskella.

Miskella said Atella was in stable condition.

On Tuesday, KMPDU wrote a letter to the Regional Commander informing them of the planned protest.

“In light of the importance of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of all participants, we kindly request your assistance in providing security during this event,” said Atella in the letter.

Last week, the union called out the Ministry of Health and Treasury for delays in posting 1,215 interns and relating money for the same.

The union further claimed that this hindered the careers of interns, endangered patients in hospitals and contributed to healthcare worker fatigue.

“On February 29, 2024, all interns will be in a peaceful procession to collect letters from MoH We have also notified the national and county government for a nationwide go-slow on March 1, 2024. In which all doctors will stand in solidarity with the interns’ impasse,” a post on their X platform read.
