Residents within the semi-arid areas of Eastern region have been advised to embrace coping mechanisms with the changing climates. With the metrological department warning of a la nina from of October, herders have been advised to dispose off their animals before the drought strikes further and to purchase later. Eastern region coordinator Isaiah Nakoru also noted that the grazing zones had reduced gradually with the increase in population and settlement. He advised the herders to put better management of their resources like saving in the banks to purchase later after the drought.
Nakoru however said the government had well laid plans to assist those affected by the drought. He added that the government through the ministry of devolution was mapping out areas affected to offer the necessary support to the people of Upper and lower Eastern that receive low rainfall. He also noted an improvement of security in upper Eastern after the government engaged elders through Chief’s and their assistants. The regional coordinator warned residents of Samburu in Isiolo for a slight increase in cattle rustling.
