A 22-year-old madrasa teacher, Sharif Hussein, also known as Ustadhi, has been charged with defiling a four-year-old girl in Lamu.
Hussein appeared before the Lamu Law Courts facing serious accusations under the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006.
The charges, which include defilement contrary to Section 8(1) and an alternative count of committing an indecent act with a child, stem from an alleged incident that occurred in September 2025 at Utukuni in Mkomani Location, Lamu Island, Central Sub-County.
“Hussein is accused of intentionally and unlawfully penetrating the minor, acts which the DPP described as heinous and unacceptable in any civilized society,” stated the ODPP.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate Hon. Peter Wasike, Hussein pleaded not guilty to both charges and through his lawyer, sought release on reasonable bond terms.
However, Prosecution Counsel Idris Kipruto Tumno, appearing for the DPP, strongly opposed the application, arguing that Hussein’s release could jeopardize the ongoing investigations and interfere with key witnesses, including the minor victim. Tumno further expressed concerns about the public outrage surrounding the case and the potential safety risks for the accused if released.
The court concurred with the prosecution’s concerns, directing the Probation and Aftercare Services to file a pre-bail report before determining bond.
In the meantime, the accused will remain in custody at Hindi G.K Prison until the matter is mentioned again on 30th September 2025.
