The Director of Public Prosecutions has achieved a conviction of Margaret Kemunto Nyaribo, a woman in her middle age, following her guilty verdict for the trafficking of a minor for labour exploitation.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Nyaribo was found guilty of violating Section 3(3) as read with Section 3(5) of the Counter Trafficking in Persons Act.

“Delivering the verdict, Milimani Children’s Court Chief Magistrate Hon. Bernard Ochoi stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt through compelling testimonies and exhibits presented in court,” ODPP said on X.

The ODPP further said that Prosecutors Linda Ndambiri and Victor Preston Owuor demonstrated that Nyaribo transported the minor from Kisii to Nairobi under the false promise of enrolling her in school.

“Instead, the minor was subjected to forced labour as a house help and occasionally forced to sell vegetables at Nyaribo’s kiosk.”

The offence carries a mandatory punishment of at least 30 years in prison, a fine of no less than Ksh. 30 million, or both.

The ODPP said that sentencing has been set for January 21, 2025, pending the submission of a pre-sentencing report.
