Jackson Kuria Kihara, also known as Cop Shakur, a correctional officer at Bungoma Main Prison, was apprehended on January 15, 2025, for disseminating false information, thereby contravening Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act No. 5 of 2018.
“Jackson Kuria Kihara alias Cop Shakur, a prison officer at Bungoma Main Prison who was arrested on January 15, 2025 for publishing false information in direct violation of Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act No. 5 of 2018 has been charged,” noted the detectives.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations the suspect is accused of knowingly and unlawfully disseminating false information on his X account, under the username Shakur the Cop, on January 11, 2025.
“He appeared before Milimani Court No. 5, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was granted a bond of Sh100, 000 with the alternative of Sh50, 000 cash bail,” the DCI said.
The allegations against Jackson Kuria arise from a post made on January 11, 2025, which claimed that specific government officials were accountable for recent abductions. Authorities contend that this assertion was untrue and aimed at provoking public unrest.
He was arrested on January 15, 2025, at the staff residence of Kamiti Maximum Prison. Kihara was initially held for a period of three days to facilitate additional investigation. He has since emerged as a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration.
The case is scheduled for mention on February 17, 2025.
