PS Muthoni Vows Stronger Public Health Protections Amid Nicotine Crackdown

Kenya’s Ministry of Health reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health through a robust crackdown on nicotine products.

Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, speaking at a press conference, emphasized the government’s resolve to enforce strict regulations despite legal challenges.

This decisive action signals a renewed hope for protecting Kenyan citizens, especially the youth, from the harmful effects of tobacco and related products.

Muthoni’s statement highlighted the critical need to prioritize public good over commercial interests.

“We will go all out to ensure public health aspects are respected in this country. We cannot destroy a nation, destroy our country, destroy our young people because of selfish interests,” she declared, underscoring the gravity of the issue.

The Ministry’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to enforce laws governing the sale, manufacture, and advertisement of nicotine and tobacco-related products.

The crackdown, which has faced legal hurdles, remains a top priority.

Muthoni called on all stakeholders to comply, urging, “Therefore with all due respect I want to state categorically that we continue enforcing the law with the sale, manufacture and advertisement of all nicotine tobacco-related products.”

She also appealed to industry players to consider the broader impact of their actions, stating, “Ensure you think about public good first before making one coin. Think about many people who are dying of cancer because of you.”

This commitment reflects Kenya’s dedication to a healthier future, with the Ministry actively working to mitigate the devastating effects of nicotine on public health. The ongoing efforts, despite challenges, offer a beacon of hope for improved well-being across the nation.
