Kenya leaders have continued to express concern over the growing misuse of social media, urging Kenyans to exercise caution and responsibility in their online interactions.

Speaking during the memorial service for his late mother, Annah Nanyama Wetang’ula, in Mukhweya village, Bungoma County, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, called for responsible social media use, highlighting its potential as both a communication tool and a source of harm.

The Speaker emphasized the need to adhere to laws that govern the digital communication, particularly the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.

“Social media is a very good medium of communication, but it can also be destructive if misused,” Wetang’ula stated.

“Those who spread hatred, wish harm on others, or commit cybercrimes must face the full force of the law. Let us protect our society and uphold decency,” added Hon. Wetangula.

Enacted in 2018, the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act addresses growing concerns over digital misconduct, including cyberbullying, identity theft, and the spread of false information.

Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah echoed the Speaker’s sentiments, as he advocated for strict enforcement of the Cybercrimes Act.

“Those who misuse computers and artificial intelligence to insult, defame, or mislead others must face consequences. The law must act as a deterrent,” said Ichung’wah.

As the country grapples with the challenges of the digital age, the event served as a poignant reminder of the need for decency and accountability in the online spaces.
