Education ministry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. George Magoha has defended technical and vocational training course saying they were not inferior. Speaking at Kisii National Polytechnic during an exhibition for polytechnics the CS remarked vocational courses acquisition was the way to go if the country was to advance and tackle unemployment among the youth. His sentiments came amid revelations that hundreds of candidates who qualified for entry to public universities opted to join technical institutions.
Magoha expressed shock that despite technical training potential in the country, none of the apprentices could manufacture a motorcycle or simple bolts and nuts. He reminded students at the institutes and vocational centers that they will be unfair to themselves to continue waiting for formal employment at home after training. The country trained skilled manpower for the world as opposed to individuals who later resorted idleness for lack of employment. Magoha alluded to president Uhuru Kenyatta’s recent tour of Britain where Kenyan nurses whom the economy will not accommodate were offered job opportunities.
