In a ruling issued in the National Assembly on Wednesday, the National Assembly Speaker Wetangula declared Kenya Kwanza as the majority and Azimio as the minority.
“I respectfully guide the Honorable Members that the Kenya Kwanza Coalition is recognized as the Majority Party in the House, while the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party is acknowledged as the Minority Party in the House,” read the Speaker’s ruling in part.
The speaker’s ruling contradicted the court’s ruling which declared Azimio as the majority in Parliament.
The Speaker reiterated that Kenya Kwanza remains the majority with 165 MPs while Azimio remains the minority party with 154 MPs.
“Consequently, the Kenya Kwanza Coalition is recognized as the Majority Party, while the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party is designated as the Minority Party in the House,” ruled Speaker Wetangula.
However, the Azimio leaders did not take the ruling positively and they walked out of parliament promising to take further action on the ruling.
“This government is broad but not based, so don’t call us a broad-based government… As Azimio, we very respectfully disagree with your communication… As Azimio, we are going to take further action,” said Hon. Millie Odhiambo.
