10 IEBC Officers Resign

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission  officials have resigned owing to the uncertain future of the electoral body.

The officials including Returning officers and members of the electoral body’s secretariat are said to have opted to quit over anxiety in the institution.

More officers have reportedly held talks with government officials planning on their safe exit after they were informed of a proposal to have them vetted, to ascertain whether they were fit to handle the 2017 General Election.

According to IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, tension within the IEBC was likely to undermine preparations for next year’s elections.

“It is true that the commission secretariat is facing serious uncertainties. There are concerns that any delayed decision on the future of the commission is going to impact on the preparation for the elections,” Chiloba was quoted by the Nation.

The report names some of the officials who have decided to quit as James Awuor Okondo, Erick Kioko and John Ekonit Komol among others, while Mr Fred Memusi and Wayne Kioko are also set to quit.

Earlier on, claims emerged that four commissioners had written to the President expressing their willingness to leave office.

The Commissioners have been under pressure from various quarters including; politicians, religious leaders, civil groups and the general public to resign as they could not be trusted with managing the next elections.
