17 GSU officers injured in road accident while patrolling Bungoma

Seventeen GSU officers were injured after the truck was involved in an accident at Marakaru shopping centre in Bungoma on Monday. Four are said to be in critical condition at the Bungoma referral hospital. Witnesses said the driver lost control of the truck which veered off the road and rolled several times.

“It all of a sudden veered off the road, running into a nearby farm after it rolled several times,” Peter Simiyu said.

He said officers from Bungoma police station arrived 20 minutes later and rescued those injured who were dressed in anti-riot gear.

“Immediately they arrived they kept the public away, picked the belongings of their colleagues and left in a convoy,” said Mary Kituyi, a resident.

She said police helmets were scattered all over the scene. Area OCPD David Kirui said the officers were patrolling the area when the accident happened. He said they are part of a team sent to the area to keep vigil and prevent post-election riots. The region has however experienced relative calm with businesses going on as usual after the polls.
