4 High School Students Among 11 Suspects Charged In Court Over Home Burglaries

Eleven suspects including four high school students were on Monday arraigned before a Kabarnet court to answer charges related to a series of burglaries at three Estates of the Town.

The suspects who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate (SRM), Edwin Mulochi included three family members, a father, mother and son are alleged to have committed the offences in a series of burglaries at Kaptimbor, Mumol and Kaprogonya Estates in Baringo Central Sub-county.

Accused included Lucy Bundotich, Constant Sifuna, Andrew Kiprop, Shadrack Kibet and Oliver Juma, who were arrested on Saturday by police following a public outcry and hundreds of assorted household goods recovered during an impromptu raid.

Investigating Officer, Bernard Kwemo, who filed a miscellaneous case said complainants are still identifying their properties and he is yet to obtain search warrants of other accomplices believed to be behind the syndicate terrorizing Kabarnet.

Kwemo prayed the court for 14 days to detain the suspects, to enable them to complete investigations that include recording statements from the complainants and witnesses coming from various places, adding that more recoveries are expected.

Bundotich pleaded with the court to release her on bond claiming she has a small baby whom she is still breastfeeding, while Sifuna told the Magistrate that he has brothers in school who depend on him.

The four schoolboys who were among the burglary suspects told the court that they were still students and they needed to continue with their studies.

SRM Mulochi directed the Investigating Officer to complete investigations within 24 hours and ordered that the suspects be detained for a day.

The court ruled that the case be mentioned today.
