CJ Koome Honored As African Female Leader of 2023

Chief Justice Martha Koome on Friday Night was crowned as the African Female Leader of 2023, in the 12th edition of the African Leadership Persons of the Year Awards in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Koome was feted for her trailblazing leadership as the first female chief justice of Kenya. Additionally, she was recognized for her accomplishments in the judiciary, particularly improving access to justice, promoting gender equality within the legal system, and advancing judicial reforms to strengthen the rule of law in Kenya.

The African Persons of the Year award honors individuals who make significant contributions to the advancement of the continent, inspiring future generations and positively shaping Africa’s global reputation.

In her acceptance speech, the CJ underscored that the honor didn’t solely reflect her individual accomplishments but also symbolized the collective dedication and resilience of individuals striving for excellence across the continent.

“This award is not mine alone to claim. It is an accolade that I dedicate wholeheartedly to the institution I am privileged to lead, the Judiciary of Kenya. This recognition shines a light on our collective endeavor to establish a truly people-centered justice system,”

“A system that is responsive and attuned to the needs, experiences, and expectations of the Kenyan people, especially those who are marginalized and vulnerable,” she said.

She also stressed the significance of recommitting efforts to Africa’s development, nurturing a culture of excellence, and building systems and institutions that prioritize the welfare of all.

“This recognition spurs us to persist in our pursuit of leadership excellence and to relentlessly enhance the quality of service delivery by our institutions. It is a call to action for all of us to continue working tirelessly for the advancement of our continent and its people,” she emphasized.

Furthermore, she advocated for a renewed commitment to advancing Africa’s development, fostering a culture of excellence, and constructing systems and institutions that genuinely serve the people’s interests.  She concluded her speech by saying, “Together, we can shape a brighter, more prosperous future for Africa.”

Other highlights of the prestigious event included the win by the former Tanzania’s president Jakaya Kikwete. He received the African Peace and Security Leader of the Year Award while Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, the Group CEO of First Bank Nigeria Limited was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in Banking.
Past winners of the African Persons of the Year Awards include former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Sudanese Businessman Mo Ibrahim, Atiku Abubakar and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General, World Health Organization.
