Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati Dies

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is dead.

Chebukati being a lawyer by profession and electoral chief died on the night of Thursday, February 20, 2025, while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

He had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for nearly a week after reports surfaced that he was critically ill.

Chebukati, who was born on December 22, 1961, was appointed IEBC Chairperson in January 2017 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He served in the position for six years, completing his term on 2023.

During his tenure, Chebukati oversaw two highly contested general elections, navigating the complexities of Kenya’s electoral landscape.

Despite facing immense political pressure, he remained steadfast in his commitment to electoral integrity and democratic principles.

His leadership during the 2017 and 2022 elections earned him both praise and criticism, solidifying his place in Kenya’s history as a defender of transparent electoral processes.

His passing comes just days after reports indicated that his health had taken a critical turn.

President Ruto has mourned the passing of Chebukati citing him as a diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” President Ruto stated.

However, details regarding the cause of his illness remain undisclosed.
