KDF Soldiers Compensation Proposal rejected by the National Assembly

The National Assembly on Wednesday rejected a proposal to offer huge compensation packages to Kenya Defence Forces  soldiers killed or injured in action.

The House turned down proposed amendments to the Kenya Defence (Amendment) Bill which sought to offer Sh20 Million to families of soldiers who got disabled or were felled in battle.

A proposal to waiver school fees in all learning institutions for children of KDF officers injured at war was also included in the Bill sponsored by Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament.

The changes were dismissed by Speaker Justin Muturi who cited complex financial implications as the main reason of rejecting the amendments.

According to the Speaker, Parliament had not implemented appropriate provisions that would help cater for budgetary requirements which would arise with the passing of the proposals.

He added that monetary implications had not been determined since the Budget and Appropriations Committee did not consult with the National Treasury before considering the amendments.

Calls to have the soldiers compensated increased following aggravated assault of the troops on Somali-based al shabaab militants in which service men have continously lost their lives.

Many especially complained following the January El Adde attack where the country lost scores of commandos after a KDF camp was ambushed and wiped out by the terror group.
